Go Dutch! - The Netherlands are leading the way in Europe’s eMobility revolution

Continuing our series about EV charging infrastructure development across Europe, we turn our attention to the Netherlands - a country that stands as a beacon for eMobility. The Netherlands is not only one of the most EV-friendly countries in Europe but also a global leader in charging infrastructure development. Let’s dive in and explore how the Dutch are charging forward and embracing sustainable mobility in a big way.

The Dutch EV infrastructure boom

The Netherlands has made remarkable progress in EV infrastructure, boasting over 500,000 charging points as of mid-2024 (of which over 200,000 are for public use). This positions the country as the leader in Europe, ahead of Germany and France, in terms of EV charging availability.

The Dutch government, through the National Charging Infrastructure Agenda (NAL), has been a driving force behind this expansion, aiming to ensure that the nation’s charging network can accommodate the rapid increase in EV adoption.

Legislative advances and incentives

The Netherlands is confronting a significant mobility challenge as it strives to meet the ambitious goals set by the Dutch Climate Agreement, which aims for all new passenger vehicles to be zero-emission by 2030. To accommodate the increasing number of electric vehicles, the availability of charging infrastructure must continue to grow significantly.

There are several initiatives that support the expansion of EV charging infrastructure. For example, the Electric Passenger Car Subsidy Scheme (SEPP) offers financial support for individuals purchasing or leasing new electric cars. This scheme is part of the government's broader effort to make electric vehicles more accessible and encourage widespread adoption.

The Public Charging Infrastructure Heavy Transport Subsidy Scheme (SPULA) provides financial assistance to entrepreneurs and Charge Point Operators (CPOs) who invest in building or expanding publicly accessible charging stations. This subsidy is particularly aimed at ensuring the infrastructure can support the demands of heavy vehicles like trucks. This is important as HGVs (Heavy Goods Vehicles) have increased on the road thanks to the explosion in e-commerce.

These programs highlight the Netherlands' commitment to expanding its already extensive and advanced EV charging network across all vehicle categories.

The Dutch companies leading the way in Europe

The Netherlands has produced several key players in the EV charging world that are at the forefront of the eMobility revolution and are setting the pace for other CPOs across the continent, especially when it comes to infrastructure development.

One of the largest CPOs in the Netherlands, Allego operates thousands of charging stations across the country, as well as many more across 15 other countries in Europe. They focus on providing fast and ultra-fast charging solutions, which are critical for long-distance travel and reducing charging times.

Allego recently announced a partnership with Ford to deploy 400 kW ultra-fast chargers across Europe, further enhancing charging speeds and increasing their network's capacity to serve high-demand locations.

Specializing in fast charging, Fastned operates a growing network of stations along highways and urban areas. Their commitment to 100% renewable energy ensures that charging an EV in the Netherlands is not only convenient but also environmentally friendly.

In 2024, Fastned reported a 45% increase in revenue and opened 22 new stations, including eight in the Netherlands, as part of its ambitious expansion plan to reach 1,000 stations by 2030.

Shell is a global giant, but its origins are Dutch and 60% of the company is still owned by the Royal Dutch Petroleum Company. As part of its global shift towards cleaner energy, Shell has established numerous charging points across the Netherlands, including fast chargers at key locations. Their network continues to expand, with a subscription free service catering to both urban drivers and those traveling across the country.

A pioneer in the EV charging industry, EVBox provides a range of solutions from home chargers to public and workplace charging stations. Their technology is widely adopted across the Netherlands, making them a key player in the country's EV infrastructure.

EVBox recently launched the EVBox Troniq Modular High-Power charging station, a 400 kW charger, marking a significant step forward in ultra-fast charging technology.

The Road Ahead

The Netherlands’ EV infrastructure is on a robust path, with continued advancements in technology and strategic government initiatives that support a smooth transition to electric mobility. As the country pushes towards its goal of exclusively selling emission-free vehicles by 2030, the focus will remain on expanding and optimizing its charging network to meet growing demand.

The Dutch model of integrating policy, private investment, and technological innovation offers a blueprint for other nations aiming to enhance their EV capabilities. As the Netherlands continues to lead in this space, it is setting a high standard for sustainable mobility in Europe and beyond.
